Welcome to another insightful look at health and fitness, in this issue we will discuss what
constitutes good health and how to maintain a balanced lifestyle through all aspects of health, as the quote above clearly states, one’s health can not be defined solely through the food we eat. The subject of health is a complex one and should be considered as four separate spheres – social, political, economical and spiritual. Within this context we will categorise ones health under one of three headings; the good, the bad and the downright ugly. In order to see the bigger picture and achieve optimum all round wellness it is vital to keep an open mind.

The following article considers the contention between a body that is predominantly alkaline and the implications for one that has too much acid, we consider the effects too much of either can have on the body and ways to maintain an equal balance in both.

The Good:

When thinking about your health it is important to realise that your body as a whole
is made up of 70% water and 30 % matter, the cells in your body are surrounded by water, but it is impossible to know how clean this water really is. In order to keep the water around your cells pure it is beneficial to keep your PH at a neutral or slightly more alkaline setting. To do this you need to feed your cells oxygenated food and water and preferably from natural organic sources, the reason being that an oxygen rich body is an alkaline body, and an alkaline body is one where disease or illness cannot exist. Alkalinity then, is a tendency towards good health and the way to measure your own alkalinity is via the PH scale. The PH scale runs from 0 – 14 with 7 as the middle ground, to reach perfect alkalinity it is expected that your blood will measure between 7.36 and 7.44 on the PH scale. The human body adapts well and heals itself; fighting off disease without your knowledge but only if the internal environment is in balance. When your body is at a perfect alkalinity, a state known as homeostasis, everything works well and your energy level is high. You can maintain this good energy by eating foods that are alkalizing to the body, for example leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and wheat grass. I don’t need to mention how crucial exercise is to the upkeep of good health however it is worth remembering that it abets the elimination of toxins in addition to keeping you fit.

If you wish to find out your body’s alkalinity you can buy PH strips from a pharmacy and test your saliva or urine however the most accurate method is to have a blood test which most clinics will carry out.
