Iman the fashion icon

She broadened the definition of beauty, transformed fashion into entertainment and models into personalities. The enigmatic entrepreneur and social activist talks to SHEEKO.

When an individual does not need a last name to be recognized, they belong to a very elite class of celebrity. Iman entered that select group during the late 1970s, when she became one of the most recognizable and popular fashion models in the world. Iman’s sexiness doesn’t seem to be disappearing with age. While the women she shared cover space in the 1970’s seem to be fading, she has remained as beautiful and attractive as ever. At 54 years old, her skin still glows and looks flawless. Her dainty looks still remain untarnished. Her forehead, neck, and high cheekbones are still visible trademarks of this enigma. As a former model, it’s not surprise that Iman has an eye for fashion and a brain for sensibility.

She has never opted for an over-thetop look or taken part too heavily in any trend. When asked about her style, she said “My personal style hasn’t changed much over the years. It has become better because I’ve really horned to what looks good on me. I’m not a girl who likes trends and they usually don’t work for everybody – so I know my short comings hence I dress appropriately”. This rather conservative style may not be the type of gear to land her on a best dressed list, but she has firmly entrenched herself on our ‘most graceful’ list, which seems a little more fitting. One look at her renowned dark eyes is more than enough to understand why David Bowie had to marry her.

Year after year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) honors those who have given back to the fashion industry with their creative designs, talents, and accomplishments. Iconic supermodel Iman will be honored with the Fashion Icon Award this year with the winners to be announced in New York on June 7 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. She joins fellow supermodel Kate Moss, who was awarded with the accomplishment in 2005. After the major model moments that Iman has given to the industry, it’s only appropriate that she should receive this recognition. “I’m humbled and honoured to be receiving this award” says Iman.

Model and a business executive Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid is sometimes described as her native land's most famous export. One of the most soughtafter fashion models of the 1970s and 1980s, Iman became a successful business executive in the 1990s with her own line of cosmetics. Married to rock star David Bowie since 1992, she became a mother for the second time at the age of 44 in the summer of 2000, but it was just one of many boundaries the enigmatic entrepreneur and social activist has broken in her lifetime. "She broadened the definition of beauty," declared Washington Post writer Robin Givhan of Iman's stunning, exotic looks. "She made earthiness sensual. She helped to transform fashion into entertainment and models into personalities."

An occasional actress, Iman twice appeared in Miami Vice playing Dakota in Back in the World (1985) and Nina Beka in No Way Out (1987) with Kevin Costner. She also played the role of Lois Blyth in Love At First Sight (1988), played a shape shifter named Martia in the 1991 film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and appeared in the Oscar-winning film Out of Africa alongside Robert Redford and Meryl Streep.
