Beth
Teshome has dedicated her life to flattering women
and in particular brides with her unconventional designs-embracing
the femininity of women’s wear whilst developing
an acutely individual sensibility.
Pablo Picasso’s greatest muse was his favourite
mistress, Dora Maar; Shakespeare’s ‘extemporal
god or rhyme’ was Anne Hathaway. For this young
Ethiopian designer, flee- markets around the world,
the streets around the west end, and Camden in London
are the holy grail of fashion.
Beth’s mum had a significant influence in her
life “ as a kid I liked dressing my mum and
coordinating outfits and that’s how I got into
fashion and then did my portfolio when I was still
at school.”
Seven years after her debut, Beth has a couture house:
A Beth Teshome show is a spectacle. I am backstage
at Camden Fashion show ‘Significant other’.
As the models patiently endure hours of preparation,
everything is given a surreal twist. They are all
wearing extraordinary hairdos and make-up. Cavernous
eyes surrounded by glitter, like shards of broken
glass.
And then there are the clothes: defiant, and enhancing
the female sculptured form at the same time. A procession
of stripped organza layered together to form magnificent
delicate dresses. Beth sums them up in three words:
Simple. Luxuries. Sophisticated.
